KEY CHANGES FOR 2021: 

  • All races will be out-and-back to eliminate the need for buses/shuttles
  • All races will start and finish at the Jumping Off Rock trailhead on Flint Hill Rd.
  • All runners will be directed to park in a large field approx. 1/4 mile west of start/finish area
  • All races will be started in waves in order to comply with social distancing requirements; participants will receive their wave start time prior to race day
  • The 40-Mile race remains unchanged (20M out and back)
  • The 20-Mile race has been shortened to a 16-Mile race; runners will turn around at Hwy 109 (8-Mile marker)
  • The 8-Mile race has a new course: 4-miles out-and-back north of Jumping Off Rock trailhead to King Mountain (highest elevation on the Uwharrie Trail)
  • All participants, volunteers, and spectators are required to wear face coverings at all times, except when running
  • The 2021 event will be hosted at half capacity and is expected to sell out quickly
  • Post-race will be a “grab-n-go” format; congregating will not be permitted in order to comply with outdoor gathering capacity restrictions

Location
The race is run on the Uwharrie Trail in the Uwharrie National Forest. All races begin and finish at the Jumping Off Rock trailhead on Flint Hill Rd. (also known as State Road 1306), two miles east of Ophir, NC.

Parking
**NEW for 2021** In order to eliminate the need for shuttle vans and buses, all participants will be directed to park approx. 1/4 mile west of the start/finish area in a large field. Directions to parking location will be posted shortly.

Packet Pick-Up & Check-In

40-Mile: Packet pick-up/check-in opens @ 6:00a

*Please do not check-in before your scheduled time. All participants are required to check-in on race morning (even if you picked up all of your stuff early!)*

Bag Check
40M runners only will receive a bag for bag drop. The bag will be available at the 20M turnaround and again at the finish. Official drop bags will be provided – no personal bags or duffles accepted.  No valuables, please!

Awards
All finishers receive handmade pottery awards from Michael Mahan, a local Seagrove potter.  Top 3 male & female finishers in each race receive special commemorative pottery and shoe certificates from ALTRA.

Aid Stations
Aid stations are situated at the 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35 and 38-mile points. Water, GU Roctane energy drink, soda, GU energy gels, and pre-packaged snacks available at most aid stations. Soup, snacks & hot drinks at the finish area. Aid Stations also have basic first aid supplies, so please ask if you need anything.

NOTE: 8-Mile Runners will have 1 aid station at approximately the 3- and 6-mile mark located at the Joe Moffitt Trailhead.

EMTs will be stationed at the 8-Mile mark, 20-Mile mark and start/finish areas. HAM radio operators are located at most aid stations for the purpose of tracking runners and communicating with the race director. Please ensure your bib number is clearly visible at all times. If you choose to discontinue the race at any point, you must report your name and bib number to an aid station volunteer.

Pre-Race Dinner
There will not be a pre-race pasta dinner in 2021.

Crew Access
Crews may access their runners at the 8, 11, 20, 29, 32 and 38 mile points. Driving directions are posted at the top of the page.
